Candidate Sourcing from Reference Checking

Reference checking can be an important component in your recruiting and candidate sourcing process. This ChequedTV episode explains why you should do it and how to do it most effectively.

Why Do it?

  1. You have more information on a reference provider than you think such as where they work, what they do, etc. Use it!
  2. The numbers are in your favor. Nearly 1/3 of the labor force is either looking for a new job or considering a move. Plus employment satisfaction rates are at an all-time low. The reference may be in the group of people and looking to make a move.
  3. Reference checking has a magnifying effect on your pipeline. Each candidate equals 3-5 reference providers. This creates a natural talent base for you.

How To Do It

  1. ASK. Ask a transition question at the end of the reference check. Something simple like “Do you know anyone else who may be a fit for our company?” will do the trick. If you are using an automated (online) reference checking system like Chequed.com, incorporate this question into the “Thank You” screen or email.
  2. CAPTURE. Collect and capture basic demographic and work history information from the reference and collect it in your applicant tracking system or human resource information system. An automated (online) reference checking will do this for you by default.
  3. TRAIN. Train your hiring managers to do this as well. Especially in specialized or technical roles, they may have better results than HR.
  4. CONNECT. Every time you check a reference, connect with that reference provider through social media such as LinkedIn. If you are using Chequed.com, you can do this automatically through the Sourcing tab.
